Our Story
Founded by Fr. Marian Zelazek SVD in 1976, Karunalaya and it's missions have extended to touch the lives of thousands in Puri as we provide access to housing, education, food, health, economic rehabilitation and social integration to people affected by Leprosy. Puri is known for the Jagannath temple which is a famous Hindu pilgrim centre attracting huge crowds, thus also attracting people with Leprosy as their usual profession is begging. This made it an obvious choice for Fr. Marian to continue his missionary work in India.
Fr. Joseph Philip SVD now heads Karunalaya and in collaboration with volunteers, organisations and the community continues to realise the dreams of Fr. Marian. From small beginnings, Karunalaya now houses more than 1,000 people, runs a 22 bed hospital to treat general illness and Leprosy, educates more than 600 children and runs a hostel to house a further 65 children. Karunalaya also founded Ishopanthi Ashram Centre of Dialogue and Spirituality which invites people from all religions engages in spiritual programmes, learning and services to reach out to the marginalised people of Puri and promote genuine God experiences.
